The fruit business is booming at Makongeni’s Madaraka Market in Thika sub-county as the heat continually increases.
Area business persons have turned to fruits as most of them hawk them at stalls, shops and salons among other shop outlets in the area to ensure they quench the thirst of every person in the area.
The hawkers are also overwhelming the buses and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) which use Garissa Road as the passengers travelling for long distances are also craving for the fruits to cool off.
According to Johnson Kang’ethe, a fruit vendor in Makongeni area, the business is booming mostly due to the hot climate that is expected to end soon as the weathermen predict the oncoming El-Nino rains.
He explains how he changed his business from the grocery to the fruits after he noted the sudden change in the market and demand for fruits.
“I have been engaging in the sale of groceries on large scale but due to the decline in demand, I left the business to my wife and shifted to fruits. This is after I noticed the public is demanding the fruits more than the groceries at the moment due to the hot weather,” he said.
A close check in the area shows that the fruits business has been the major priority among the business persons who have shifted from other businesses
