Hundreds are flocking the County Director of Education offices in Nakuru to submit applications after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced the recruitment of 70,000 teachers on contractual basis.

The inanticipated inflow of people has forced offices at the office to open a temporal tent outside the office to help accommodate the large numbers which are expected to increase in the coming days before the October 5 deadline set by TSC.

While officially launching the exercise, the Commissions chief executive officer Nancy Macharia noted that the move is aimed at providing a stand-in alternative for the striking teachers.

According to Ms Macharia, the teachers will be hired on a three-month contract pending consideration for a permanent employment when vacancies arise after their contracts expires.

She revealed that the exercise was to be conducted at the county level because of the time limit saying that the commission was behind schedule ahead of the national examinations.

“Interested candidates are therefore asked to submit their applications together with copies of their certificates, transcripts, testimonials and national identification cards to the TSC county directors of their respective home counties,” she said.

The commission will recruit 50,000 primary school teachers and 20, 000 secondary teachers.

“Applicants must be trained teachers aged below 45 years of age, experience is not paramount. Primary level applicants must be P1 holders while having a diploma certificate will be necessary for the secondary applicants,” she explained.

She further cautioned applicants against filling forms at more than one station saying that it will lead to automatic disqualification.
