Public universities and colleges in Kisumu County have been urged to focus more on quality education and market courses relevant to the Kenyan market.
Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga said learning institutions should ensure graduates acquire skills which can benefit the country.
Speaking at the University of Nairobi Kisumu City branch during the college's open day on Wednesday, Odinga said relevant courses will enable graduates get jobs easily.
She said skill based and practical courses were in high demand in many factories that were set to be revived like cotton industries.
Odinga noted that many jobs today attracted people with many qualifications in diverse fields and urged students to desist from narrow career paths.
She wants universities to review the content of their courses.
She said this will make the education offered in higher learning institutions relevant to the development needs of the country.
“We are calling upon institutions to start offering leadership and management undergraduate programmes,” she said.
She said relevant management and leadership programmes will adjudicate the emerging demands both in public and private sectors.
She also said the courses will cover various disciplines such as purchasing and supplies management, business administration and marketing management.
The Dean of Students, University of Nairobi Kisumu City branch, Teresiah Okumu asked the deputy governor to be ready to take up the challenge of mentoring the campus' students.
