Nakuru’s United Republican Party (URP) secretary general Samuel Towe has urged MCAs to refrain from making statements that promote tribalism.

Speaking to reporters at the party offices in Nakuru town, Towe warned that statements by some elected ward representatives over the suspension of Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (Nawassco) managing director John Cheruiyot might fuel tribalism.

The secretary general said that there is no need for politicians to attack each other as Nawassco has a constitution that guides them.

He alleged that some politicians with selfish interests are taking advantage of the controversy surrounding the suspension of Cheruiyot to divide residents.

“It is unfortunate that some politicians guided by selfish interests want to divide residents on tribal lines. We should not let this happen amongst ourselves and those that we represent,” he said.

Towe asked the MCAs to work together to promote development in their wards instead of engaging in political fights.

Two weeks ago, Nakuru MCAs disagreed over who should be the next Nawassco managing director.

The ward representatives, led by Solai MCA Paul Chebor, went to the company’s headquarters to enquire why Cheruiyot was sent on compulsory leave.

Shortly after, a group of TNA elected ward representatives, which supports acting managing director James Ng'ang’a, came in led by John Gichangi. A confrontation started with each side blaming the other for the happenings at water services company.

Workers at the company were unable to control the rowdy MCAs and security guards were called in to intervene.
