Machakos motorists have been advised to use Kangundo Road as an alternative once the Mombasa highway is closed this evening to avoid inconveniences.

Speaking in his office on Friday, Athi River deputy county commissioner, Kodeck Makori said his office was working closely with relevant departments to ensure order on the road during the three days US President Barack Obama is expected to be in the country.

"We advise motorists intending to use the busy Mombasa highway to use Kangundo Road as an alternative to and from Nairobi once the road is closed this evening," said Kodeck.

Kodeck said enough security officers have been deployed on the road to control traffic and his office had also made arrangements to ensure smooth flow of vehicles on Kangundo road alongside ensuring the motorists and passengers were safe from smugglers.

The area police boss Kizito Mutoro on his side said Athi River was a major player in ensuring safety and order on Mombasa road since it borders Nairobi area.

Mutoro said the Athi River police were working very closely with those from Nairobi and foreign security agents to ensure surveillance and security along Mombasa Highway especially around Mlolongo, Athi River areas and at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

He called on the area residents to remain calm and proceed with their daily businesses arguing that Athi River area stretching to Machakos and Namanga towns would not be affected as Nairobi would be during the US president's visit.

Mutoro said his officers were on high alert adding that those who thought they could take advantage of Obama's visit to commit crime in Athi River and its environs had no room at all.
