Institutions of higher learning should offer competitive courses that will allow graduates to be absorbed into the job market, a senior government official has said.

Speaking on Wednesday at Kisii University during annual founders day, Education Principal Secretary Colleta Sudi questioned the commitment by the universities and colleges in the country to offer quality education.

Prof Sudi said she was disappointed with the latest university ranking in the world in which many universities in the country failed to impress.

“Our institutions of higher learning are offering courses without assessing the market as it should be. It is always important to equip learners with skills that should make them relevant in the current job market. Our region has failed to prove to the world that we can compete when it comes to academic and that manifested itself recently in university ranking,” she said.

She urged management to provide logistics by motivating both lecturers and students besides holding public lectures from the renowned academicians in a bid to gain tact of competing globally.

“Many questions have been raised about the relationship between the management, lecturer and students and this therefore means something is wrong somewhere. Let us rise to the occasion and even invite scholars for public lectures if at all we want to move with the rest of the world,” she added.

She urged the commission for higher education to reexamine the courses offered by institutions and give a clear report on the same courses.
