Uasin Gishu county executive committee member in charge of Agriculture and Livestock Cyril Cheruiyot has urged farmers in the county to venture into fish farming as it offers better returns.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Sunday, Cheruiyot said farmers should diversify their activities instead of always depending on maize and wheat farming which give poor yields and low returns.
He said fish farming takes a shorter time to mature, requires less space and minimal capital.
"Uasin Gishu county government in collaboration with the University of Eldoret has set up a Sh10 million fish hatchery at the institution where farmers can buy fingerlings cheaply for them to start fish farming," he said.
He also added that the county government has set aside an additional Sh5 million for the purchase of 500,000 fingerlings to restock fish ponds in Kesses, Ziwa, Kiboswa and Strawburg where it is expected that in eight months, the fingerlings will have attained 300 grams and farmers will earn a total of Sh60 million.
