Kiambu County Youth Affairs Executive Machel Waikenda has warned college and university students against indulging in alcohol.
Speaking to journalists at Ruiru Town on Friday, Waikenda raised concerns over high alcohol abuse among university students in the county.
He said that university students are indulging in excessive drinking warning that it could hamper their studies.
“University and college students should desist from excessive alcohol consumption and use their time to study,” he said,
Waikenda observed that students have resulted to buying alcohol and drinking it from their hostels.
“They no longer go to bars or restaurants but are now buying alcohol in bulk and drinking from their rooms,” he said.
Waikenda said that excessive alcohol consumption will turn disastrous to their health. The CeC advised youths to shun alcohol abuses and instead focus on activities that will make them prosper.
He said that the county government has in place various development initiatives which youths can take part in. He added that through the Biashara Fund, youths can start business enterprises and empower themselves instead of wasting time drinking.
Waikenda said that the county has started sports tournaments where youths are encouraged to participate in various sports. He said the Kiambu government is determined to tackle the problems facing the youths which includes alcoholism and unemployment.
