Kikuyu Ward Representative Binary Wainaina has asked the county government to give youth jobs so as to deter them from abusing drugs and joining criminal groups.
Speaking to youths leaders in Kikuyu Town on Thursday Wanyoike blamed the increased cases of alcoholism mostly among youths on unemployment.
He said lack of employment opportunities has rendered many youths idle with most of them opting to abuse drugs.
The MCA said a huge population of young people in Kikuyu do not have jobs.
“Lack of job opportunities has made many young people fall pray to drug abuse,” he said.
The MCA asked the Kiambu government to come up with programmes that will help the youth get jobs.
Wainaina also said the drug abuse menace in the area is a result of poor parental care and peer influence.
He said drug abuse is a threat to development in the county and asked the government to stamp it out. The MCA also called for arrest and prosecution of drug dealers and peddlers in the ward.
Wainaina said some of the drug peddlers are well known people and they should be arrested and charged in a court of law.
He asked local administrators to enhance the fight against illicit brews.
The MCA said laxity and corruption could be the catalysts for illicit brews in Kiambu.
