Kiambu County Commissioner Alex Nkoyo has urged Kiambu residents who are still living close to river banks and hilly areas to move before the onset of the anticipated El~Nino rains.

The county commissioner while speaking to the press on Saturday from his office noted that some locals have not yet heeded to the advice by the meteorological department asking them to vacate river banks and hilly areas.

Nkoye said that the advice by the weatherman must be taken seriously to avert any disasters when the rains start.

“People living close to or next to river banks and hilly areas must move to safer grounds before the onset of the El~Nino rains,” said the Kiambu commissioner.

He said the county is well prepared to handle the effects of the El~Nino rains.

Nkoyo said that makeshift camps have been set up across the county for people who will be affected by the rains.

The County Commissioner added that the county government is working with other agencies like the Red Cross to put in place measures in readiness for the much hyped El~Nino rains.

Last week county governor William Kabogo said that the county has embarked on repair and renovation of drainage systems to ease flow of water when the rains start.

Kabogo also asked locals to move from areas that are likely to experience flooding before the El~Nino rains start.

The meteorological department has warned of El~Nino rains across the country. The rains according to the weatherman are already being experienced in some parts of the country.
