Kibera has always been associated with poor sanitation, crime and all manner of things one would think of since it is a slum.
But what most people do not know is that there are areas in the slum which are very tidy, thanks to efforts from the residents.
This picture has been erased by Ayany residents who have embraced cleanliness making the estate the cleanest in Kibera.
According to the residents, their clean habits have kept diseases such as typhoid and cholera at bay.
“We really fear diseases and that is why we want to maintain a clean environment,” said Brenda Muchoki.
The area’s road is always swept every morning by the county’s workers in Sarang’ombe Ward and residents are advised to shun careless littering.
The estate’s sewerage and drainage systems are cleaned up by Nyasere Associates, a company dealing with clean up services.
According to John Otieno, supervisor at Nyasere Associates, their staff help residents live in a clean environment.
“We also have youths who collect garbage from each house at a cost. Our main reason is to help residents not dump their litter everywhere. Residents are very cooperative. We want to start providing the cleaning services to the neighbouring villages and estates,” added Otieno.
