Police in Katangi area of Yatta sub-county have arrested a lady suspected to have thrown her newborn baby into a pit latrine on Monday this week in the area.

The infant that was retrieved from the pit latrine by the neighbours to the culprit who noticed some blood stains near the latrine is said to have been born a day before the incident.

The neighbours told the police that when they noticed the blood stains and confirmed that it was a baby thrown into the pit they suspected the lady who had given birth at home a day earlier and searched for her everywhere without efforts.

Yatta OCS David Terer said the lady, Mary Njirani, 23, and who is believed to have thrown the infant into the pit latrine due to desperation after the father to the kid refused to take care of them was, apprehended after the members of public informed the area chief and later the police were notified to make the arrest.

The area residents have condemned the act, saying that it could have been better to throw it at a roadside so as a Good Samaritan could rescue the baby instead of murdering it in such a brutal way.

"It's so astonishing to see what she did to the kid instead of letting it live because the infant has no mistake. There people with no children here and they are always longing to get one in vain but she can afford killing her baby," one of the women said.

The infant is set to be buried by the culprits family today in the Katangi village with the lady set to appear in court on Thursday.
