A 20 year-old woman convicted of selling alcoholic drinks without a license has been sentenced by a Machakos court to spend six months in jail.

Mary Syombua Mutua was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Lucy Mbugua and charged with being in possession of an alcoholic drink popularly known as chang’aa without a legal permit.

According to prosecution facts, the accused was found with four litres of the illicit brew at Mumbuni area in Machakos district within Machakos County on August 19, 2015.

The court also heard police officers on patrol got tipped off about the accused woman’s illegal bar business by law-abiding residents and the proceeded to arrest her.

The four litres of chang’aa seized from the accused during her apprehension were produced in the court as exhibit to the case and later forfeited to the police to be destroyed.

While passing the judgment, the magistrate stated that the defendant was convicted on own guilty plea and ordered her to pay a fine of Sh20,000 or serve six months in jail in default.

She was given fourteen days to lodge an appeal to her case.
