A woman was on Thursday jailed for six months by a Kisumu court after she was convicted of brewing illicit liquor.

Cyprin Atieno was sentenced on her own plea of guilty by Chief Magistrate Esther Maina for the offence she committed on July 27.

According to the prosecution, Atieno was arrested in Kisumu’s Manyatta Estate brewing the illicit liquor. During the arrest, illicit liquor was destroyed while the brewing equipment was confiscated.

In her defence Atieno told the court that she is aware that brewing and selling illicit liquor is an offence but said she had no other options to earn a living.

“I am not qualified for any job yet I have to survive. I looked for work everywhere but no job met my needs. I, therefore, turned to brewing liquor in order to survive. Through this business I am able to feed my family. I, therefore, ask for forgiveness from this honourable court,” said Atieno.

However, Maina dismissed the defence saying that once one has committed a crime it will remain a crime no matter what circumstances pushed you to commit the crime.
