In an effort to promote girl child education in Kiambu, a women's group has offered sponsorship to well-performing girls in Ruiru.
Speaking during their meeting on Wednesday at Withema Hall in Ruiru Town, the chairlady of the group, Faith Kinuthia, said that the group had come up with a project that will enable bright girls that clear standard 8 be able to join high schools.
She said that the group would offer cheques to those students at the beginning of every term and also cater for their shopping and uniforms when they go to school.
She revealed that there would be terms and conditions that would be agreed between the group and those who would get the sponsorship.
Kinuthia said the first will be for students to work hard and not go down past a specific grade. She said this was to ensure the girls continue with their hard work.
She said that those who will get low marks for 3 terms consecutively, the sponsorship will be dropped and offered to another.
"We have budgeted for around Sh400,000 for next year and we are calling on parents whom their children perform well in the class 8 national exams and they cannot afford the high school fees to come out and register for their daughters," said the chairlady.
However she said that the programme was to help the needy and urged parents who have the ability to educate their children to give the chance to those who cannot.
