Women in Kisumu County have termed the controversial Chepkonga Bill that strives to amend the two-thirds gender laws as a broken promise.
In a petition presented to the committee of justice and legal affairs in Kisumu, the women said that Jubilee had promised to promote and protect the role of women in the society.
Rosa Buyu, head of an action group Thuluthi Mbili za mama who read the petition, said women in Kenya are tired of empty promises to equal treatment.
“We are tired and we will take concrete, practical measures to empower women and deliver full equality in both law and practice,” she said.
The women called upon the withdrawal of the Bill and the passage of the technical working group Bill or any other Bill that provides for the realization of constitutional gender principal as required by law.
Speaking at the Social Centre in Kisumu on Friday, the venue of the forum, Buyu said President Kenyatta must keep his promise to women and require the Jubilee MPs to do so as well noting that Jubilee’s vote to the Bill is breaking promises to the women of Kenya.
A member of the committee Christine Ombaka, women representative Siaya County said the committee is soliciting views from the public across the country over the Bill.
Ombaka said the passage of the Bill now lies with the public who might propose amendments to the Bill or reject it altogether.
