Residents of Wamuguthuko in Gatundu South have welcomed the cleaning programme through the National Youth Service (NYS).
The programme seeks to address environmental challenges across most parts of Kiambu County.
Following the ongoing cleaning of the areas adjacent to River Thuita, the youths have also been praised for participating to address environmental issues as well as social problems.
“These bushes along river Thuita have been known to be the brewing dens for illicit brews. These brews have been killing our men here and across the country. Thugs have also been perpetrating crime and using these bushes as their hideouts. In addition, we will also benefit from safer and cleaner water when the exercise completes,” area DC Stephen Kiragu said on Tuesday.
The youth have also been advised to embrace the programme and use the opportunity to better their lives.
“This project will be going on for some time and those privileged to work in it are getting a good pay. I would like to urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to the fullest so that you can continue enjoying the benefits even after the programme ends," area OCPD Bernard Muli said.
He also thanked the government for initiating the project, which has provided employment opportunities to many youths in the area.
“I would like to thank the MP and the president for making this project a reality. I am now able to fend for my three children and partake in doing what I love best - community service. I would like to urge our leaders to roll out more programmes to create more job opportunities to hundreds of thousands of youths who are still seeking for jobs,” added Joan Mugure, one of the team members.
