Just days after Kibera residents decried over the mounds of garbage at the collection centres, youths from the National Youth Service on Thursday came to their aid and emptied the containers.

The cleanup which kicked off in the morning saw about 50 youths from the NYS clean the street along DC road.

According to the residents, the containers had taken close to two days before being emptied, hence posing health risks.

“We had a heap of garbage here which was producing foul smell. It was a bad picture because the litter was attracting flies and rats. This was dangerous as it could lead to a cholera outbreak,” said Winnie Mwendwa.

Mwendwa, however congratulated the Ministry of Devolution and the NYS for the good work they have done in introducing the garbage containers in the area saying it has lead to the reduction of reckless littering.

Alex Masinde said the garbage was even spilling over to the road.

“Some children walk bare feet. I feared that they could step in the water and dirt and hence contract infections,” added Masinde.
