Young people from the Gusii region have been challenged to embrace Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to empower themselves and get out of poverty and misery.
Gusii Coffee Farmers Co-operative Union (GCFCU) CEO, Robert Mainya has tipped young people from the community on the importance of investing their academic skills in the establishment of SMEs to change their lives, instead of lamenting over unemployment in offices.
Speaking to this writer in his office on Friday, Mainya challenged young people to shed the white collar job mentality and embark on applying their academic and professional training skills to establish their businesses, which he said if well managed will transform them into millionaires.
Mainya regretted that young people from the region believed that SMEs are meant for school drop-outs or those who are described as academic failures, reason why majority of the youth from school and tertiary institutions shunned SMEs in favour of white collar jobs.
“I am encouraging young people from this community to embrace SMEs, to economically empower themselves and their families instead of chasing white collar jobs which do not come by easily,” stated Mainya.
Mainya observed that having young people with entrepreneurial skills will not only transform them into economically able beings, but will contribute to the country's economic growth.
