Members of business community from Keroka have questioned the commitment of the county government to improve sanitation in the border town of Kisii and Nyamira.
Led by chairman Elkana Oremo on Sunday, the businessmen accused the county leadership of doing little to improve the sanitation of the county, citing poor drainage as a major concern.
They also questioned the persistent water shortages despite the town being in a region that receives rains most times of the year.
According to them, the John Nyagarama-led regime had ignored the town despite leading in revenue collection in Nyamira County.
“Keroka supports most operations in our county but little has been done to put our revenue into use by improving our sanitation or providing piped water. Most of own drainage systems belongs to defunct municipal governments yet we are the leading town in terms of revenue collection,” he said.
Oremo threatened to lead his counterparts to protest against the county government till the essential services were delivered in the town.
“They have no option other than to work for us. We will soon boycott remitting of taxes if something urgent isn’t done to improve the situation. We want to see clean water and improved sanitation because we pay for those services,” he added.
They also lamented on ‘few’ streetlights installed in the town making most businesses close early.
“It’s not only water and poor sanitation. They mounted streetlights but they are not in every corner of the town. Most businesses close early because of fear of insecurity,” Oremo said.
The town had elicited intrigues between Kisii and Nyamira counties before a committee appointed by the two governments unanimously agreed that it was located in Nyamira County.
