Ten persons were on Sunday arrested, after being found in possession of plastic bags in Garissa County.

The arrest of the group comes after National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) embarked on the implementation of plastic bag ban across the country in a bid to safeguard the environment from pollution.

Confirming the arrest of the persons, County environment director Josiah Nyandoro said that the suspects were found in Takaba Subcounty.

He also said that the authority will continue with the crackdown until all residents adhere to law for the sake of avoiding environmental degradation, which has been rampant in the area.

The arrested persons are likely to be jailed for one to four years or pay a fine of Sh2 - Sh4 million if they will be found guilty of committing the offense.

The 10 are expected to appear before Moyale law courts today, Monday to respond to the charges leveled against them.

The ban on plastic bags across the country has posed a great challenge to residents and businessmen in the area.

NEMA officials have been forced to conduct civic education across the nation in a bid to push the residents to support the ban.
