Every pupil or student, if asked today, would say one of their education dreams is to attain at least university education.
But are today's universities the universities that we all know?
A report on the Implementation of the Bio-metric Identification System and Automation of Students Records has revealed that there is so much that happens in these institutions of higher learning and the Commission for University Education (CUE) has blamed poor university/constituent colleges collaboration with the National Security Council for the rising crime in these institutions.
Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed said last week in the report that "universities have become hideouts for criminals, particularly in hostels" adding that there is also student radicalization that takes place in these institutions.
The CS added that politicians use hostels to host meetings that threaten the overall safety of students in universities.
CUE chairperson Prof Chacha Nyaigotti Chacha and the Secretary to the Commission Prof Mwenda Ntarangwi presented the report to the CS.
The report listed the following dangerous activities as the most common in campus hostels;
1. Orgies shot for pornographic websites at premium fees
2. Pimping First Year students to old and rich men
3. Prostitution
4. Recruitment into cults
5. Renting out hostel rooms for sex
6. Lesbianism and gay-related activities
7. Relationship instigated murders
8. Sale of outlawed drugs
9. Suicides motivated by financial problems and failed romantic relationships
10. Weed selling and baking of weed cookies.
