The police say that they managed to arrest the loggers after members of the public informed them that loggers were still on with their trade despite the ban.

Confirming the incident Kisii County environmental officer Richard Ombui said that they also confiscated machines that were being used by the loggers.

"We are serious about the ban on illegal logging in the area as today we managed to arrest ten people who have been undertaking the business despite the fact that it was banned by the Government for some time," said Ombui

Ombui further said they will ensure that the crackdown continues until Kisii County meets the minimum threshold of forest cover in the next few months.

"We are urging locals to continue planting more trees as the County has a forest cover of less than 3 percent and we are targeting a minimum of 10 percent in the next three months," said Orina

The officer confirmed that those arrested are currently held at Kisii Central police station and warned any other in the business that they will be arrested and charged.
