Maseno University lies on the boundary of Vihiga and Kisumu counties in Maseno town. It has the college and the Siriba campus.
The college campus hosts the administration offices while most of the learning facilities are at the Siriba campus.
Upon arrival at this institution, you should familiarise yourself with at least 10 places;
1. Frustration Square.
This is the 'mouth' of the main campus gate which was donated by the Kenya Pipeline Company four decades ago. Most students are found seated at this place, next to the Kisumu-Busia highway. It's perceived to host those frustrated as the name suggests. However, many tend to wait for their friends at this point.
2. Shuttle Point
This is barely six meters on your right upon entering the college campus gate. It's where the institution's shuttles stop to pick students for cheap transportation. They charge Sh5. However, some naughty students carry 'big notes' and sneak their way off the shuttle in the name of 'can't take too many coins' as change on showing off a Sh1,000 note.
3. IDP
There are no internally displaced people in Maseno. This name is dubbed to hostels that are relatively far from the rest. The Vet Farm hostel are largely preferred by those who value self-catering services since their occupants are issued with gas cookers and a well equipped kitchen, suiting student kitchen needs are in all the 100 hostels. This hostels received the highest number friends' visits from their attractive nature, especially on weekends.
4. Tsunami.
This should be a familiar term. Most student conversations never end without the mention of 'Tsunami'. These are uniquely occupied hostels. They separately accommodate either gender, but not even a glimpse away. They have the largest bed capacity and are intense 'pirate at' hostels, despite having a managed bedbug infestation.
5.Triple T.
T.T.T. Yes you got it right. Triple T is not a party poppers' place. At Luanda market, just a few kilometers away, all rave enthusiasts and student party animals eagerly wait for weekends and HELB disbursements which probably run the business.
6.Mess.
This has nothing to do with military. The two sides of the main campus has mess halls.
Students get affordable meals in these cafeterias. They are mostly associated with freshmen.
7. Bedrock
Students use this name to refer to security personnel manning the institution's security. These are the Bedrock Security Services Company employees mostly at the gates.
8. Wanyore.
Maseno is hosted by the Luo and Luhya (Banyore) communiies. The non-staff and non-students seen around or in the institution are referred to as 'wanyore' or in singular 'mnyore'. This name is in most cases linked to negativity due to students' persistent negative attitude towards members of the local communities.
9. Onyango Forest.
This is a bushy area covered with trees with a small path used as a shortcut by students to access the Graduation Square at the Siriba campus. On using this path, one easily meets friendly monkeys jumping from one tree to the other. This portrays the environment, basically green and is named after the late Prof Onyango, a former vice chancellor of the institution.
10.UCI.
Every student mentions this acronym. It's not just acrophony. Maseno University offers all its undergraduate degree courses with information technology (IT). UCI is used to identify IT units with their various codes for all students.
