Authorities in the schools chose to shut the institutions as pupils and students stayed away following attacks on members of some communities in the sub-county.

The most affected areas are Cheptais, Toroso and Kapsokwony.

The attacks have continued for the last more than one month despite visits by Deputy President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i who assured residents that more police officers will be deployed to the affected areas to restore peace.

On Saturday, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Western leaders while speaking in Eldoret called on the government to move quickly and restore normalcy in Mt Elgon as pupils and students stayed away from school because of the attacks.

Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi on Saturday refuted claims that those carrying out the attacks are members of the Sabaot Land Defense Force (SLDF) who have regrouped.

He said the attacks are carried out by youth who he said will be contained and normalcy restored.

SLDF is a gang that wrecked havoc in Mt Elgon in 2007 and 2008 and reports, then indicated that they had their bases deep inside Mt Elgon Forest and in Uganda.
