More than 100 patients with cataract eye condition in Madogo, Bura constituency are set to benefit from a 3 days’ free eye clinic camp organized by Waso Resource Development Agency (WARDA) in collaboration with area MP Ali Wario.
The exercise that started on Sunday saw over 200 patients with eye conditions being screened for cataract condition at the Madogo health Centre. Some 70 patients were found with the condition and will be operated on today.
According to eye surgeon Dr Francis Ole Sapele, the lead surgeon in the exercise said another screening will be carried out tomorrow and those found with the condition will be operated on Wednesday.
“What we are looking for our cataract patients, a blinding condition among the elderly. This camp was planned for 3 days and was to target about 100 patients,” Ole Sepele said.
The surgeon said that they will ensure that they attend to all patients with the condition who will turn up within the 3 days’ eye camp.
“We are not going to leave any patient unattended to. All those patients who will be diagnosed with the condition will be operated on,” he added.
He said the condition is common among the elderly but can also be caused by cancer, trauma, diabetes, and accident.
Area MP Ali Wario thanked the Wajir south based organization who operate within North Eastern region, Somalia, South Sudan and now Tana River for assisting the needy among the poor communities.
“Giving back Sight to those who had lost it is not something small. Majority of these people are poor and cannot afford to pay for this kind of surgery,” said Wario.
He said if funds permit, similar camps will be organized in Bura, Balambala and Bangale areas within the constituency.
Abdi Hassan 60, a beneficiary of the camp thanked the organizers for restoring his sight that he lost 2 years ago.
“I just woke up one morning and found myself almost blind. I have been suffering from this condition for the past 2 years. But now I thank God I have now regained my sight thanks to this medical camp,” he said.
