Police spokesman Charles Owino confirmed that the militants attacked a border patrol base and in return, they were repulsed by the police and Special Forces from KDF.

During the attack, he added, no casualties were reported from the police and KDF. Three militants were killed on the spot during gunfire exchanges.

"We wish to inform the public that Yuumbis Border Patrol Unit within Fafi constituency was attacked last night by suspected Al-Shabaab militants. Our officers quickly repulsed them with reinforcement from Special Forces.

"All our officers are safe while the enemies suffered three fatalities. Our security forces are on the ground pursuing the militants. Security forces are vigilant to suppress the assailants along our common border with Somalia," the statement read.

The attack comes just a week after an explosion killed seven police officers in the neighbouring Wajir County. Three officers were also kidnapped.

Voice of America journalist Harun Maruf however, claimed that Al-Shabaab militants took off with several guns from the police post. He said a Safaricom mast was destroyed.

"Reports say two Al-Shabaab militants were killed following a raid in Yuumbis village in Kenya’s Garissa County, midnight last night. Militants also used explosives to destroy a safaricom communications mast, and made away with several guns from a police station," he tweeted.
