Jonathan Moi, the eldest son of retired President Daniel Moi, stayed a calm life at his Eldama Ravine home, several meters from where his siblings stayed.
In 1974, Mr Jonathan moved with his mother to Eldama Ravine, after divorce of their parents and is said to have lived a quiet life, contrary to expectations from a son to president.
According to villagers in Kabimoi, Mr Jonathan, who stayed a private life, used to mingle freely with villagers despite their ordinary lives.
“He enmeshed himself in the local scene, and would drink beer with locals. That is how he lived,” says a close friend of Jonathan.
In 2004, Jonathan is said to have clashed with his youngest brother, Gidion Moi, who is now the Baringo senator over the controversy surrounding their mother's burial.
It's said that Jonathan felt undermined by his younger brother, who seemed keen to assume roles of spokesman for the family contrary to Kalenjin culture.
“Simply because our father transferred most of his properties to you doesn’t entitle you to become our spokesman,” a source quotes Jonathan saying.
The eldest son of Moi did not enjoy warm relationship with his father. The father, who had divorced with Lena Moi, at one point decried family challenges, saying that he felt let down by family.
Mr Gideon still acts as family spokesman and often invites guests who come to visit his ailing father in Kabarak.
