It was a double loss for some of the Moi University students on Wednesday after 'their team', Nigeria was bundled out of the World Cup by Argentina after a tireless struggle.
Many could however not express how painful the experience was after seeing all their 'investment' in betting diminished.
One Ian Kiptum, a third-year student pursuing a bachelor's degree in Information Science said most students in the campus had hoped to earn big after betting on the now famous market among them; penalty missed.
Kiptum said he had placed a bet on the market with his previous winnings of Sh17,650 after seeing his friend win big in the previous bet he had placed on the market.
He was expecting to win Sh220,625 after betting when the odds were 12.5.
Kiptum who was following live the match said at many occasions, he could hope for a spot-kick but not only that but a missed opportunity.
All was not lost for him until after the 51st minute when Nigerian midfielder Victor Moses stepped up to take the kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way after Javier Mascherano pulled Leon Balogun by the shirt leading to Cuneyt Cakir, a referee from Turkey to award the penalty.
"It was really disappointing night for me, I had hoped the Argentinian keeper could save that penalty but he didn't. To me I lost Sh220,625 and not Sh17,650 I had placed with," he narrated.
