Kenya has been nominated to host the 9th edition of the United Cities and Local Governments in Africa (UCLG-Africa), otherwise known as the Africities Summit, in 2021.
The summit will be held in Kisumu. It will be the second time the event is held in the country after Nairobi played host in 2006.
Africities is by far the largest and most prestigious meeting of representatives of local governments and cities in Africa.
While welcoming Kisumu’s nomination, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said that the event will without a doubt make Kisumu to never remain the same again.
“There's no doubt that towards the 2021 Summit and after the Summit, Kisumu City will not be the same again,” said Nyong’o in a statement.
“We thank the President of the Republic of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta and the UCLG-Africa under the leadership of Secretary-General Mr. Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi for the confidence they have shown in Kisumu City and the County Government of Kisumu. We will not disappoint,” he added.
He said the summit will place Kisumu at a vintage position to build partnerships with a wide range of state and non-state actors to ensure readiness towards hosting the event.
Other cities that have hosted the Summit in the past Dakar, Senegal, Johannesburg in South Africa, Abidjan in Ivory Coast, Windhoek in Namibia, Younde in Cameroon and Marrakech, Morocco.
