In Kenya when you think of HIV, you think about the worst. Most people infected with the virus prefer keeping it a secret rather than sharing the news. Stigmatization has been cited as one of the reasons why many prefer keeping their status a secret.
HIV affects everybody in the society and today we are looking celebrities who have admitted being HIV positive.
George Kihara aka Frigacy. In 2013, the mapenzi hit maker was the first celebrity bold enough to announce that he had contracted the virus. He was hooked to drugs at a very tender age and clubbing in Nairobi's famous joints, something that played a major role in contracting the disease. Frigacy, accepted his status and courageously shared the news with the world. Unfortunately, a year later after confession, he died under mysterious circumstances.
Richard Amouk, a member of Ukoo Flani band also tested positive for the disease. The partying lifestyle in Nairobi was also not new to Richard. After having a blast in the famous nightclubs he started showing signs and symptoms of HIV but ignored them for a while.Amouk decided to visit the hospital in 2010 after suffering for a while and later tested positive for the disease. After two years of denial he came to accept his status in 2012 and made it public.
Joji Baro well known for his fights for the rights of Gays and Lesbians in Kenya announced to the public that he was also a victim of HIV. The gay gospel artist caught his fans by surprise once he broke the news of his status.On March 11, 2011, He tested positive of the virus and it is from then that his family abandoned him.Baro became gay when he joined high school. He was involved in a romantic relationship with a Catholic priest where he became the priest's girlfriend.
