Politics of debt were once again reignited by deputy president William Ruto on Saturday even as ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi fired back.
At Kakamega, Ruto urged Mudavadi and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to pay debt by supporting his 2022 bid when they benefited in Kofi Annan's brokered grand coalition government.
"Kindly pray for me so that my two brothers support me. I backed them in 2007 and I don't see why they should not support me," he said.
While Raila was appointed Prime Minister, Mudavadi landed Deputy Prime Minister position.
In a quick rejoinder at the function, Mudavadi recalled how Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta promised to back him in 2013 only to make a U-turn.
"I don't owe anyone. If you are ready to battle out, just join us. We shall settle that in ballot.
"I remember how you also promised to support me inside my house only to abandon me in 2013," said Mudavadi amid laughter.
During the elections, Mudavadi finished third behind Raila Odinga and eventual winner Uhuru Kenyatta.
Ruto is marshaling for support in Western region, a traditional stronghold for Raila Odinga.
