Opposition leader Raila Odinga has finally come out clear about the people who brokered his March 9 truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta earlier in the year.
Raila told the Sunday Nation that the deal was brokered by a special and carefully selected group of elders.
He ruled out the narrative that the same was influenced by foreign powers, saying that the team of 'counsels of wisdom' was purely composed of Kenyans.
The Orange party boss noted that contrary to how most Kenyans described, the truce was not a surprise at all.
He claimed that the same was planned from late last year, and the date carefully chosen to avoid speculations.
Among the things that led them to settle on the date was the visit of US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson late last year, adding that the plan was to avoid making him a mediation king.
"They (foreign powers) had nothing to do with this. It was purely home-grown. We knew doing so after he comes or when he is around would have given the impression that it was the West that brought us together,” he is quoted.
Raila, however, refused to disclose the identity of the so called 'counsels', but maintained that the fruits of their efforts are already visible courtesy of the current national calm.
Raila and Uhuru have since promised to embark on a national unification tour next year, after their joint and historical tour of the Luo Nyanza opposition bedrock on Thursday and Friday.
