34-year-old Andre Iniesta announced his retirement from international football Sunday night after Spain were edged out of the World Cup by the hosts, Russia after a tense penalty shootout.
''Sometimes, the end is not as you dreamed it,'' he told the media in an emotional address.
Iniesta was part of the star-studded cast that enabled Spain to win the World Cup in 2010 and has played 131 games for his country.
Here is what football-loving residents of Garissa had to say about the development:
''It was sad to see him announce his retirement after Spain's loss to Russia,'' Kuno Mohamed said.
''He is creating space for a new generation of players. I wish him well,'' Halima Juno said.
''I hope to see him involved i football in another capacity, may be as a coach,'' Khalif Godana said.
''He was one of the best players of his generation. His flair on the field will surely be missed,'' Jamaa Sukre said.
