Former Subukia lawmaker Koigi Wa Wamwere has expressed worries about the Jubilee government's worsening appetite for loans, most of them foreign.
Speaking on Saturday, Koigi said that the habit will land the nation in a financial crisis in the coming days.
He urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to use alternative methods to earn the money needed for his development plans.
The veteran politician advised that Uhuru has another option, and can harvest billions of shillings for his initiatives just be sealing corruption loopholes.
He noted that the government loses about Sh700 billion in corruption annually, monies that if put to proper use, can see the nation comfortably make major development strides.
"Ufisadi wetu unatugharimu bilioni 700 kila mwaka. Kama tunaweza epuka ufisadi tutaishi bila mikopo (corruption costs us Sh700 billion yearly if we can avoid the loss we can survive without loans)," Koigi said.
He further said that judging by the rising levels of graft in the nation, the government might even have it harder paying the loans it already owes its lenders.
"Lakini tukiendelea kuruhusu watu waendelee kuiba tutashindwa hata kulipa mikopo tuliyoichukua (if we allow people to continue stealing we might not even be able to pay the debt we already owe)," he advised.
Koigi who doubles up as one of the longest-serving political detainees was speaking on Cheche, on Radio Sauti ya Mwananchi, Saturday evening.
