Mtwapa, a town at the North Coast that has recently gained the status of a city, maybe the fourth city of the country Kenya. It is actually called the 'Sin City', an indication of many sins happening in this coastal town.
Sex workers and their business are some of the contributors and stakeholders of the 'sin city' title. They are in the town in their numbers, from different parts of the country. You will meet Kikuyus, Luhyas, Kambasa, Somalis, Kalenjins, Luos and all other tribes.
Brothels are also many in the town, maybe to cater for the many 'customers'. These brothels are of different standards and in different locations.
The amount of money the client has determines the standard of these brothels.
1. Guesthouses
They are just usual guesthouses you are thinking of, but some guys book them for prostitution purposes. Attendees cannot tell why you are booking the rooms. They, in most cases charged at least Sh2,000 per night depending on where it is situated, its size and other added services including a fridge where you can keep your drinks.
2. High-class brothels
They are close to guesthouses. This type of brothels are used by 'first class sex workers' who don't accept to transact businesses with 'poor' guys. They prefer guys who drive or tourists. They also charge at least Sh3,000 up to Sh10,000 for their services depending on who is in the frame. They are very choosy when it comes to brothels.
3. Roadside 'brothels'
This is where these 'slay queens' try their luck from roadsides for passersby. If the deal materialises, chances of it being closed from the very same point or few steps from the 'crime scene' are too high as compared to going to pay for a nice brothel.
4. 'Bora uhai' brothels
Bora uhai is a common phrase amongst Kenyans. It basically means so long as one is still alive, and will not die from whatever situation, then all is well. These brothels are of low standards, found away from the town. One needs boda-boda guys to access them.
