The nominee, Mwende Mwinzi, passed the parliamentary vetting for post, but still has a test ahead of her. It is now upon her to decide to renounce the citizenship failure to which he will lost the prestigious job.

According to Section 31 (1) of the Leadership and Integrity Act, an individual with dual citizenship cannot hold a State Office.

Any individual who secures the post of ambassador or High Commissioner must be ready to renounce one of the citizenships before she or he can take up the positions.

Mwende appeared before the National Assembly Defence and Foreign Relations Committee where she was vetted.

The committee had also vetted other seven nominees for the position before Mwende appeared for the same. The committee chairman, Mr Katoo Ole Metito (Kajiado South MP) recommended for her approval to position only if she denounces the dual citizenship.

“The committee recommends that Ms Mwinzi be appointed subject to renouncing her US citizenship,” he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.

The Parliamentary is expected to either approve or reject the nomination of the high commissioner. She told the committee that she was born in the US but she belongs to Kenya.
