Five people have died while nine others sustained serious injuries after their vehicles were involved in an accident along Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
According to Athi River police boss Sharma Wario, the accident occurred at around 8:30 am this morning at Kapiti plains in Machakos County.
Eyewitnesses said the lorry's driver attempted to overtake other vehicles on the stretch of the road leading to the accident.
The lorry was moving towards Nairobi from Mombasa while the 14-seater matatu was headed to the opposite direction when the incident occurred.
Wario said the matatu was ferrying members of a church from a crusade in Siaya County.
"They are faithfuls of St. Marys Miracle church Magongo in Mombasa who were coming from a crusade in Siaya before the tragedy struck," said Wario.
David Otieno who survived the accident said the lorry's driver tried to overtake other vehicles flashing full lights and within seconds their vehicle was smashed.
The sight was gory when journalists reached the scene.
Bodies were hanging from the windows, with open skulls and blood splashing on the tarmac.
The victims were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment while bodies removed to the same facility's mourtuary.
The vehicles were towed to Kyumvi police station.
