Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has urged the government to conduct wide consultations before implementing the 1.5% housing levy.
Ngilu says that while the idea is good there is need for consultations especially with employers and the taxpayers.
Speaking at the Council of Governors office in Nairobi on Wednesday, Ngilu asked the government not to rush the project.
“It is a noble thing but there is need for enough consultations between the government and stakeholders who are taxpayers,” she said on the sidelines of a press briefing called by some governors on the ravaging drought.
The housing levy deductions continue to elicit mixed reactions from Kenyans.
On Wednesday, a Nairobi Court temporarily stopped the government from implementing the levy.
Justice Maureen Onyango while ruling on a suit filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) halted the implementation until the case will be heard on May 20, 2019.
The Judge ordered for consolidation of the COFEK suit together with another one filed by the Federation of Kenya Employers.
in it's case, COFEK termed the housing levy as unconstitutional, and accused the government of rushing to implement without the consent of taxpayers.
On Tuesday the government announced that the levy was to take effect starting next month.
The housing fund is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four development agenda and is geared towards providing cheap and affordable housing for Kenyans.
