Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has opposed calls for the country to hold a referendum.
Ngunjiri said although there is a need to amend the constitution in order to address government expenditure, the move should not be through a popular vote.
Speaking in his constituency on Friday, Ngunjiri said the changes can be deliberated at party level through inter-party parliamentary group meeting.
“Holding a referendum at the moment will be already bestowing a heavy burden on members of the public. If ODM leader Raila Odinga really appreciates the “Handshake” then he should read the mood of the ordinary mwananchi and find that they are already overburdened,” said Ngunjiri.
The Jubilee legislator was categorical that the many commissions in the republic are using a lot of tax payer’s money whereas some could be merged as they seem to duplicate roles.
His sentiments come at a time when Deputy President and NASA leader Raila Odinga continue to differ sharply over calls for a referendum.
