Barely a day after Eliud Kipchoge smashed the world marathon record by an astonishing one minute and 18 seconds, a North Rift county has renamed its top stadium after the marathoner.
Kipchoge set a new world record in the long distance race after clocking 2:01:39 on his way to winning the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.
Apart from receiving praises from Kenyans led by the head of state and his deputy, Kipchoge, named the greatest marathoner of all time will now have a stadium named after him.
Coincidentally, the stadium in his home county, Nandi, had been named after his namesake and also a sports legend Kipchoge Keino. Eliud Kipchoge’s rural home is in Kipsisiywo village, Mosop constituency.
While announcing the move on Monday, Nandi governor Stephen Sang said the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Kapsabet town will be renamed Eliud Kipchoge Sports Complex.
“Because this stadium shares the same name as the Eldoret Kipchoge Keino stadium, we have lost a lot of support that would easily have come here going to the other side because of the confusion,” said Sang.
“It is for this reason that we are renaming this stadium as Eliud Kipchoge Sports complex and it will have in place all the facilities,” he added.
