It is one year since the country experienced some sort of political cease-fire after the contentious 2017 elections.

The 2017 elections go down the echelons of history because they saw a legally elected president take oath as President of the Republic of Kenya while another disgruntled leader at the time took an oath for an imaginary office as the” people's president”.

This antagonism almost brought the country to her economic knees. However, in what most political analysts and commentators call a “stroke of genius” by opposition supremo Raila Odinga, the historic handshake happened between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

After this, there was a sigh of relief for many peace-loving Kenyans. The shilling appreciated in the following weeks and it has been stable against strong international currencies.Nonetheless, immediately after the much hype about the handshake which essentially collapsed NASA coalition with a unilateral act, Uhuru stumbled into an abyss that is corruption.

Even with his resilience to fight it, he has either been misinterpreted or misunderstood in a way that some political players see it as an attack on his deputy William Ruto.

Political observers, historians and supporters of William Ruto who was Uhuru's heir apparent one year ago now seem to doubt the same position as the president seems to gravitate towards his brother and former political nemesis Raila Odinga.

This has brought the country to almost where we were a year ago. Raila and his attack dogs are on DP Ruto accusing him of all manner of corruption scandals.

In retaliation, DP Ruto’s support base is up in arms with all manner of political weaponry and disrespect for the president as if it was a royal rumble.

My considered opinion is that President Uhuru must as a matter of urgency act as the president of the Republic of Kenya and Chief of the Defence Forces call upon Ruto and Raila to tame their tongues.

The two leaders should also control their political attack dogs. This is the only way Uhuru will achieve his legacy which is entrenched in fighting corruption and uniting the country; this is the only option he has.
