AU special envoy for infrastructural development Raila Odinga will on Friday lead Kisumu county officials in initiating a project which is geared towards eradicating water hyacinth from Lake Victoria.
The initiative which is in collaboration with the revamping of the port will kick off at 9 AM in earnest and will be attended by National and County government officials, representatives of the Ugandan government and members of the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB).
As detailed by Engineer Javan Wanga in charge of Inland Water Ways, removal of the weed will be followed by dredging of the harbour.
A press statement released by Governor Nyong'o's Press Unit Director Alloys Ager reiterates the same.
“Revitalising the lake for optimization of the blue economy is an initiative of the national government spearheaded by President Uhuru Kenyatta under the blue economy focus, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Kisumu Governor Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, in collaboration with the government of Uganda,” reads part of the statement.
The Director said the 4,000 tone dredging vessel which is owned by Mangoe Tree Ltd of Uganda, has crossed into the Kenyan waters and expected to berth at the Kisumu Pier.
He added that the dredging and the removal of hyacinth are just part of the great transformation of the lake related activities which include the construction of the new port as well as rehabilitation of the related infrastructure.
After the event, Odinga is expected to remain in Kisumu ahead of the 25th anniversary since the death of his father, first Vice President Of Kenya Jaramogi Oginga Odinga to be held at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground on Sunday.
