Addressing more than 3,000 first-year students during their ongoing orientation at the Njoro campus, Kahi said the new trend of sponsors has ruined many young souls.

“Today our female students proudly talk of sponsors while male students have sugar mummies. It has become normal. This should not happen at Egerton,” Kahi said said.

The don urged the freshmen to ensure they focus on their academic journey.

"I want you to remain university students, not students in the university. You came here to study, that is your core business. Avoid laziness and examination malpractices,” he added.

The acting VC also hit out at many young men who use their time and money on sports gambling. The trend is another vice that is ruining the lives of the 'boychild'.

“It is sad that some students get money from their parents to pay fees but gamble it away, If you squander fees you will end up miserable as you will not register for examinations," he said.
