Kisii County Governor James Ongwae is under siege after matatu operators downed tools protesting the decision by his government to charge matatu operators Sh3,500 monthly parking fee.
The matatu operators, led by Joshua Nyariki on Wednesday while speaking in Kisii town said they would not resume work until the county government scraps the parking fees.
“We can’t afford to pay the county government Sh3,500 parking fees because there is no business. Fuel prices have been hiked. Ongwae should come clean and order the fees to be removed,” he said.
According to Joseph Maangu, the matatu owners’ secretary, the county government should charge them Sh2,000 parking fees and not Sh3,500.
“We agreed with the county that we would pay Sh2,000 parking fee monthly and not Sh3,500. Ongwae has until Friday to address the issues, or we take to the streets because that is the only way he could listen to us,” Maangu noted.
He said there would be no going back until the county government agrees to their demands.
