Ruto said the barber was worried about an Sh120,000 hospital bill but was told to his relief that the bill had been taken care of by his NHIF contributions.

Speaking during a live interview at Kameme FM on Thursday, Kenya's second-in-command hailed his barber's story as proof that NHIF was working for Kenyans in spite of criticisms from some quarters.

"I am a witness even my barber told me that he took his mother to the hospital and was wondering how he was going to pay a bill of 120,000 shillings but he was told that the bill had been taken care of by NHIF," he said in the interview shared on YouTube.

Dr Ruto said that the hospital fund had benefited many Kenyans with low earnings and took issue with those who were against the contributions made to the fund.

He also revealed that more than one million Kenyans considered vulnerable were having their NHIF contributions made by the government.

The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), led by its secretary general Francis Atwoli, contend that the contributions should be based on basic pay and not gross pay.
