Eldoret is one of the towns which were hugely affected by the 2008 post-election violence in Kenya. The town experienced loss of lives and property characterised by protests along the streets after former president Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of 2007 presidential elections.
However, on January 31, 2008, fresh protests were witnessed in Eldoret when David Kimutai Too and his companion Eunice Chepkwony were shot dead along West Indies estate in Eldoret town.
Too was to serve as the elected Member of Parliament for Ainamoi constituency. The killings, at the height of the post-election violence, worsened the riots in Eldoret and the South Rift, the home area of the MP.
Andrew Omwenga was the man convicted of the murder and he later claimed in court that Eunice Chepkwony was his lover. Both Eunice and Andrew were traffic police officers and the killer is said to have been trailing the two from Eldoret town to West Indies and pumped bullets into the MP's head and Eunice’s body.
The legislator died on the spot while Eunice was pronounced dead on arrival to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Omwenga was arrested and charged in court by Chief Justice David Maraga who was then a judge at Nakuru high court. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
