Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has declared an interest in the 2022 presidential election.
Kuria says he is the right politician to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta who is serving his last term in office.
The vocal Gatundu South lawmaker has already made posters marketing his 2022 presidential ambition and vowed to defeat Deputy President (DP) William Ruto and other competitors in the 2022 presidential race.
Kuria’s interest in the 2022 presidential seat could be a big blow to DP Ruto who is banking on the Mt Kenya region for support.
Ruto is expecting president Uhuru Kenyatta to endorse his bid and ask Mt Kenya to vote for him.
However, with Kuria’s entry into the 2022 race, DP Ruto should get worried about Mt Kenya’s endorsement.
The Gatundu South MP enjoys massive support in Mt Kenya and is likely to deny DP Ruto votes in the region.
According to Kiambu based political analyst Peter Ngure, chances of Mt Kenya backing Ruto in 2022 are becoming zero.
The analyst says that DP Ruto needs to strategize for his presidential bid without Mt Kenya in mind.
“It is going to be tough for him (Ruto) because the majority of Mt Kenya politicians some who were once his allies are walking away from him,” he said on Thursday.
A section of Mt Kenya politicians led by Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu has however maintained that the region will stand with DP Ruto in 2022.
During a church service at PCEA Mwiki in Nairobi on Sunday last week, Waititu asked President Kenyatta to stand with Ruto.
Waititu claimed that Ruto made Uhuru president in 2013 and 2017 and he cannot betray him.
