Kenya is one exceptional country in Sub-Sahara Africa where politics is the order of the day from one electoral cycle to the next.

It is only a year after the gruelling 2017 general elections that almost left the 55-year old nation divided, save for the handshake, but the battle lines are already being drawn ahead of the 2022 poll.

But that is Kenya and Kenyans for you and politics define them better than anything else.

That said, the pressure is already kind of being mounted on Deputy President William Ruto to name his running mate for the 2022 presidential race now that he is the de-facto Jubilee Party presidential candidate.

The argument by some of these leaders led by Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu is that Central Kenya voters cannot 'blindly' rally behind Ruto in the name of paying political debts without knowing what is in store for them.

Some analysts argue that the least that Central Kenya voting block can accept to be able to support Ruto is a DP position.

So, can Ruto clear the air now by telling the Central Kenya voters what they want to hear or he will wait for the river to swell beyond the point of no control?

Well, Central Kenya voters may have to wait for far much longer to know their position in Ruto's government, if he is lucky enough to occupy the house on the hill. Here is why.

1. Ruto is keen to avoid divisions this early

What if Ruto was to clear the air today and name his most preferred running mate? It would be the end of his dream to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Whether the running mate is from Mt Kenya or not, the split that Jubilee Party would experience would perhaps be next to the biblical schism between Judah and Israel.

2. It is unwise

Robert Greene in his widely read book notes, 'Power cannot accrue to those who squander the treasure of words'.

It would, therefore, be unwise for Ruto to rush to put all his cards on the table just to please a few people as if the election is in a few months time. In fact, the less he speaks on this matter, the better.

3. Politics is about surprises

The more that Ruto keeps people guessing about his preferred running mate, the more relevant he remains. Doing otherwise will boomerang on him and cause him unmeasured grief.

4. He will be opening a can of worms

Naming his running mate at this point will expose both of them to endless scrutiny and smear campaign from political detractors such that by 2022, they will be stinking of everything bad you can think of under the sun.
