In an exclusive interview with the BBC in Washington, the president said that he did not intend to defy the constitution by seeking another presidential term.

"We work on the basis of the constitution. All my predecessors have functioned on that basis. There is no provision for that. You cannot, on one hand, be committed to fighting impunity and on the hand be part of that impunity" the president said.

There has been talk in various quarters of another presidential run in 2022 by Uhuru.

The Kenyan constitution allows for a two-term presidency.

To run for a third term, one would require a constitutional change to that effect.

COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has on various occasions talked about Kenyans giving President Uhuru another term beyond 2022 to give him more time to slay the dragon of corruption.
